Impact of the january and february 2001 el salvador earthquakes on the churches of the roman catholic cultural heritage
Abstract
On January and February 2001, three earthquakes and their corresponding aftershocks produced disastrous effects in the population, the physical infrastructure, the social services, the productive activities and the environment of El Salvador in Central America. A great number of historic Catholic churches included in the National Heritage inventory were damaged. UNESCO designated a team of consultants for evaluating damages caused in the cultural heritage. The main purpose of this article is to document the observations made by the team of consultants on the physical damages in the historic Catholic churches and a description of the evaluation method. This paper also shows the main interpretation of the most common damage features in this type of buildings.
