A physical zoning analysis for the reduction of vulnerability of slums in the venezuelan andes

Carlos Ferrer

Abstract

The analysis proposes the application of a method to enable the definition of hazard levels for mountainous areas in terms of stability/instability and propensity to slope collapse, limiting factors associated with the torrential activity of rivers and streams, restrictions resulting from subsoil failure or sub-drainage effects, without excluding the lot restrictions related to the response of alluvial fans in slum-occupied lands. The key elements in the definition of physical parameters which may potentially induce change are: gradient values, lithology and structural formation so as to fix the relationship between discontinuities and terrain sloping. Special emphasis is made on seismicity, and the difficulties to collect precipitation-related data are pointed out. The evaluation of the construction typology and damage levels form part of vulnerability. This information sets the basis of recommended land use diagrams and synthesis, helpful tools for decision-making when restoration plans are executed.
